Impairment Coverage & Assembly Safety

FDNY Fire Guard & Fire Watch Services

When a sprinkler, standpipe or alarm system goes out of service, the building loses the protection it was designed around. A fire guard restores a form of that protection the only way a person can: by walking the affected area, watching for trouble and being ready to raise the alarm. 7SECURE provides fire guard coverage in NYC and fire watch services across Long Island and Westchester.

Our officers are assigned with the FDNY Certificate of Fitness required for the assignment, and they are posted to do one job. Fire watch is a temporary measure that holds a building safely occupied until the impairment is corrected, not a replacement for the repair.

The Trigger

When a Fire Guard Is Required

The most common reason is an impaired system. Planned maintenance, an emergency repair, a failed inspection, freeze damage over a cold weekend or a construction tie-in can each take a sprinkler, standpipe or fire alarm system offline. A fire watch may also be required because the FDNY or a local fire code official has ordered one, or because an indoor or temporary place of assembly must staff safety personnel while it is occupied.

These requests tend to arrive without notice, and they are urgent: a building with an impaired system may not be able to remain occupied without coverage in place. Urgent requests reach a staffed operations center at any hour rather than a voicemail box.

The Post

What a Fire Guard Actually Does

The work is patrol and observation. The officer covers the affected area on the interval and route required by the fire code official or the authority having jurisdiction, looking for fire, smoke, heat, odors and the ordinary hazards that accumulate on a work site or in a busy building. Exits, corridors and stairwells are checked and kept clear, because egress matters more than ever while detection or suppression is down.

The officer must also know how to act: how to notify the fire department, how to alert occupants, where the fire command station and system valves are, and who to reach in building management. Every patrol is recorded in a written log with times and observations. That log is the evidence the building did what it was ordered to do, and an inspector may ask to review it.

New York City

FDNY Certification and Why It Must Match

In New York City, a fire guard must hold an FDNY Certificate of Fitness appropriate to the assignment. An F-01 certificate covers fire guard duty for impairment, which applies when a sprinkler, standpipe or fire alarm system is out of service. An F-03 certificate covers safety personnel at an indoor place of assembly. An F-04 certificate covers safety personnel at a temporary place of assembly.

These are not interchangeable. An officer certified for assembly duty is not thereby qualified for impairment duty, and an inspector who finds the wrong certificate on the post has found a violation. 7SECURE staffs a fire guard NYC assignment with officers holding the FDNY Certificate of Fitness required for that specific assignment, confirmed before the post begins.

Long Island & Westchester

Fire Watch on Long Island and in Westchester

Outside the city the framework differs. A fire watch in Nassau, Suffolk or Westchester is generally ordered by the local fire marshal or fire code official, and the building owner is responsible for notifying the local fire authority that the system is impaired and a watch is in place. Patrol logs are kept throughout and may need to be submitted as that authority directs.

What does not change is the quality of the officer. A fire watch Long Island assignment is only useful if the person on it has been briefed on the building layout, the fire protection systems and their shutoffs, the emergency plan and the occupancy in use. We ask for that walkthrough before the first patrol rather than discovering the building's quirks at two in the morning.

Construction & Renovation

Hot Work and Systems Taken Offline

Construction and renovation generate both the hazard and the impairment at the same time. Welding, cutting and torch work introduce ignition sources into combustible spaces, while alarm and sprinkler work during tie-ins removes the systems meant to catch a problem. Hot work often requires a watch that continues after the crew stops, because a smoldering ignition can take time to show itself.

Occupied buildings under renovation are the hardest case, since residents or tenants live and work above a partially protected floor. Many of those properties also want continuous coverage of lobbies and access points. Our lobby security officers can cover that alongside a fire guard post, but always as a separate post: the fire guard is never asked to do both.

Accountability

Why Clients Choose 7SECURE for Fire Watch

7SECURE is a New York State Department of State licensed Watch, Guard and Patrol Agency, licensed, bonded and insured, and its officers come from active and retired law enforcement and military backgrounds. A 24/7 operations center takes urgent impairment calls directly, which matters when a system fails on a holiday weekend.

Fire watch is also, candidly, the post where a provider's integrity shows. An officer who sleeps, skips patrols or fills in a log from a chair creates real liability for the owner. Our Integrity Control Unit performs unannounced covert checks for exactly that reason. For assembly work, our event security guards team coordinates safety personnel alongside crowd and credential planning.
